French import Carzoff made it back to back wins in Cup races with victory in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup following his win the Listed Wyong Cup at his previous start.
Kerrin McEvoy was in the saddle for both wins and produced a patient ride to find late gaps and burst through to claim victory.
“He’s in a really good space the horse,” McEvoy said. “He’s loving travelling around there on the bridle and being the last one off the bridle and getting the splits just fills him with confidence.
“He’s showed that his last couple of runs, so it was pleasing to see him do that today over an extra furlong.”
The 2300m of the Newcastle Cup proved no problems for Carzoff and he now likely to tackle the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap over 2400m at his next start.
“I was quite impressed with that at 2300, which he hasn’t done before,” commented stable representative Liam Prior. “I don’t know what the boss is thinking, but I suppose the Metropolitan
Handicap lines up now in a fortnight and that’s probably where he deserves to be heading.”
Carzoff was purchased at the Arqana Autumn Sale less than two years ago and is now feeling at home in Australia.
“He showed a lot of ability early when he first arrived and then he took a while to find his way and now he’s starting to put it together,” Prior said. “It’s the right time of year to be doing it.”
That was his fourth victory in Australia and he has taken his prizemoney past A$400,000 since arriving down under.
