The talented but quirky Sambro got serious on Saturday, putting his mind on the job and was rewarded with a brave victory in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas.
It was a deserved victory for the son of Fastnet Rock after being twice stakes placed last preparation, including a narrow second in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington to eventual Group 1 Australian Derby winner Levendi.
Often his own worst enemy, Sambro has his quirks that he is finally growing out of.
“He’s got no malice in him, he’s just playing because he was just a child. He’d put a foot up in the barriers and get scratched,” commented Chris Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth.
“He’s finally come of age and worked it all out. His barrier manners have improved enormously now he’s got the right head gear on.
“He would have won a lot more than two by now if that had been the case a year ago.”
Sambro was purchased from Baramul Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is raced by Mr F W Cook, Mrs C M Cook, Mr J M Simmons, Ms S M Fitzgerald, Mr R S Canceri, Mrs J A Canceri, Mr S Saric, Mrs J C Saric, Mr K H Warriner, Mr I Bruce, Mr J T C Lake, Mr B Pang & Dr A Pang.
