Exciting three-year-old filly Unforgotten produced a memorable win in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes on Saturday.
There was uncertainty leading into the race with Unforgotten pulling up with a cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that causes an irregular heartbeat, when failing last start in the Surround Stakes.
“It upsets their heart, but it comes back to normal straight away. They don’t pull up distressed. They just can’t find their top gear and don’t get ridden out to the line,” Chris Waller said.
“The vet checks them when they get back to the stable and she was a full picture of health.
“I’m adamant it’s more a stress related thing – like a bump in running or missing a stride.”
Stewards required her to trial before her next start. She was due to trial last Tuesday, however, that meeting was postponed until Thursday, meaning a two-day back-up from trial to race.
“I said to the owners that we wouldn’t make a decision until 7.30 this morning on whether she’d run,” Waller said.
“She had 60 something kilos next week at Gosford so I thought we might as well run her today, ride her quiet and let her finish off.
“That’s how she won her races in the summer when she started building her reputation.”
Last preparation Unforgotten stung together three consecutive runs before going for a spell. She has now won four of her seven starts and has earned $307,020.
She is raced by her trainer along with Magic Bloodstock Racing, Mr F W Cook, Mrs C M Cook, Mr N A Greenhalgh, Mrs M T Greenhalgh, Mr R Shrimpton, Mrs C Shrimpton, Mr I Bruce, Mr R Smith, Mr P Y W Ng, Mr K H Warriner, Mr J T C Lake & Mr B L Mathieson.
She was purchased at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Premier Sale for NZ$360,000 from Curraghmore Stud.
