Import Vassal broke through at stakes level to win the Listed $125,000 Christmas Cup over 2400m at Randwick on Saturday.
Purchased in England, Vassal was a maiden arriving in Australia and has racked up seven wins and 10 placings, with career earnings of $395,442. Selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock and purchased by Mick Flanagan’s Townley Hall Bloodstock, Vassal was bought for just £28,000 at the Tattersalls July Sale.
In Vassal’s previous start to Saturday, the son of Dansili finished sixth in a seven-horse field with a big weight despite the relief of apprentice rider Lee Magorrian. Kerrin McEvoy took the winning ride on Saturday with just 53kgs on his back, a telling weight drop.
“I think we underestimate the big weights horses have to carry – I realise you’ve got to have big fields with a spread of weights but gee it stops horses in staying races,” commented trainer Chris Waller.
“He dropped to the limit today and tracked into the race beautifully.
“For a horse like him, there’s a lot of similar races coming up like the New Year’s Day Cup and Australia Day Cup so he’ll be in those races as long as he doesn’t get too much weight.”
Vassal is raced by a big group of owners including Mr F W Cook, Mrs C M Cook, Mr D M Ackery, Mrs K Ackery, Mr I Bruce, Mr N G Karasoulos, Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Lamphee Racing, Mr J T C Lake, Mr K H Warriner, Mr B P Bradley, Mr L A Mackenzie, Mr E W Waugh, Mrs B Waugh, Mr L James, Mr P J Walsh & Mr D C Walsh.
