Grand galloper Montauk gained a deserved black-type win with success in the Group 3 Summer Cup at Randwick on Boxing Day.
A consistent performer with five wins and ten placings to his credit prior to yesterday, Montauk was given a good ride by bush-based rider Matthew Cahill to capture $150,000 feature.
“I thought he was beautifully ridden. Mathew was given some advice from Glyn and Brenton (Avdulla) who obviously know the horse really well,” commented Chris Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth.
“They said he needed to be cuddled as long as you dare and he managed to near enough cuddle him all the way over the line.”
“That was his Derby. He’s a tough performer. He just doesn’t win very often so it’s good to get a Group race to his name.
“He’s the kind of horse that needs his confidence up. He’s rock-hard fit and the track is a little bit softer than official good 4 rating and that helped.”
The win was the sixth in Montauk’s career and took his earnings to just shy of $500,000 for owners Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Whitby Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Mr N A Greenhalgh, Mr R Shrimpton, Mrs C Shrimpton, Mr J Robinson, Mr B A Rutter & Mrs S E Clark.
Selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock, Montauk was purchased by Chris Waller Racing for $180,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from Vinery Stud.
