In form Alward added to his outstanding record in Australia with a convincing victory in the $100,000 IGA Liquor Handicap (2000m) at Randwick.
The victory was Alward’s fourth in his last five starts, with his other run a fourth placed finish. His first win in Australia came at Flemington before he transferred to Sydney for two wins at Rosehill and Saturday’s triumph at Randwick.
Just three horses lined up in the race which was a tactical affair with Veladero setting an even pace, favourite Up ‘n’ Rolling in second and Alward dropping to the tail.
Punters believed Up ‘n’ Rolling was unlucky in his defeat to Alward last start but in the small field there were no excuses and Alward proved he was the superior horse, giving both horses a start and raced away for victory by one and three-quarter-lengths.
Racing in the colours of New Zealand Syndicators Go Racing, operated by Albert Bosma, Alward took his earnings in Australia to A$234,400 for owners that includes Bosma along with Mr I D Dobson, Mr P J C Fisher, Mr F B N Fox, Mr B F Winsloe, Miss C L Cotter, Mr T M Beer, Mr A S Jones, Mrs M P Patton, Mr C B Patton, Mr R L Burns, Mr A R Ormond, Dr H Swart, Real Kiwi, Mr G R Molloy, Mrs G J Molloy & Mrs S C Hunter.
Selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock at Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale, Alward was purchased by Chris Waller Racing for 35,000 guineas.
