Despite being second past the post Wayanka (Encosta De Lago) came out the winner after a protest was upheld in the $100,000 TAB.com.au Handicap over 1400m at Rosehill.
The Chris Waller-trained galloper was interfered with by Interlocuter who was first past the post but Waller and rider Brenton Avdulla were successful with their complaint to the Stewards and their protest was upheld, awarding Wayanka the win.
Recently campaigning in Melbourne, Wayanka enjoyed a winning return to Sydney on the back of good form in the southern state. The son of Encosta De Lago was a winner two starts ago at Flemington and has been close up in all of his starts this campaign.
Avdulla had Wayanka positioned near the back of the field and was following Interlocuter. Once in the straight, Wayanka went for a run on the outside of Interlocuter but was shut out by that runner and forced to go wider to obtain clear running. With a margin of less than a head, it was determined the interference was significant enough to reverse the result.
Selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock and purchased by Chris Waller Racing, Wayanka was bought for $120,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The four-year-old gelding has won $185,125 in prizemoney, including bonuses, from his four wins to date.
