European import Alward (Aqlaam) got his impressive record in Australia back on track with victory in the $100,000 Ranvet Handicap over 2000m at Rosehill.
Racing in the colours of New Zealand syndicators Go Racing, Alward has won three out of his last four starts. He was defeated last time out when finishing fourth as the favourite but a rise in distance to 2000m and a top ride by Hugh Bowman saw him victorious.
Trained by Chris Waller, Alward settled fourth under Bowman in the eight-horse field with favourite and stablemate Up ‘n’ Rolling on his inside.
Travelling well as they entered the straight, Bowman kept his stablemate pocketed while Alward dashed to the front and drew away for a three-quarter-length victory.
Saturday’s victory was Alward’s third from six starts in Australia and he has earned A$181,025 in prizemoney down under for his owners that includes Go Racing principal Albert Bosma along with Mr I D Dobson, Mr P J C Fisher, Mr F B N Fox, Mr B F Winsloe, Miss C L Cotter, Mr T M Beer, Mr A S Jones, Mrs M P Patton, Mr C B Patton, Mr R L Burns, Mr A R Ormond, Dr H Swart, Real Kiwi, Mr G R Molloy, Mrs G J Molloy & Mrs S C Hunter.
Selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock at last year’s Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale in England, Alward was purchased for £35,000 by Chris Waller Racing having won one race from seven starts in his native France.
