Two-year-old Tangled (Snitzel) announced himself as a major contender for the Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes with an impressive victory in the Group 2 Champagne Classic at Doomben over 1200m.
A maiden winner at his previous start, the son of Snitzel unleashed a blistering turn of foot in the Champagne Classic to come from well back in the field and win with authority for rider Kerrin McEvoy.
The eye-catching win was enough to prompt Waller to single out the JJ Atkins as a target for Tangled.
“The JJ Atkins looks a logical race for him and he should relish that trip,” commented Waller. “Kerrin McEvoy was into him from the word go today.”
Out of Group 1 New Zealand Oaks winner Bramble Rose, Tangled looks ideally suited to the 1600m of JJ Atkins and has come to hand at the right time.
“We didn’t keep him back for the Queensland carnival by design, he is a late maturer who put his hand up a few weeks ago when he won a maiden race quite impressively,” Waller said.
“We thought we would bring him up here and see how good he is – but he certainly proved today over 1200m he has got a lot of class.”
Tangled was selected by Mulcaster Bloodstock at the 2016 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and purchased by Chris Waller Racing for $310,000 from Newgate Farm. He is raced by Mr N A Greenhalgh, Mrs M T Greenhalgh, Mr R Smith, Horse Ventures, Mr I Bruce, Mcennis Racing Pty Ltd, Mr F W Mitchell, Henry Field Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Mr I M Lilburne, Ms E M Weston, Mr R L Mckay.
