New Universe Two for Two in New Country

The Chris Waller trained New Universe (Darci Brahma) has made a perfect start to his career in Australia, winning his first two races at Rosehill.

An impressive first up win over 1200m was followed by another eye-catching effort second up, dropping back in distance to 1100m.

New Universe was purchased privately by Mulcaster Bloodstock for owner Mr CC Lai having won two of his three starts in New Zealand.

The three-year-old by Darci Brahma has been ridden to success in both starts by Tommy Berry and has reeled off some impressive sectionals.

In New Universe’s first run, he was ridden conservatively at the tail of the field and showed an electric turn of foot to come home in 33.03 seconds for the final 600m and claim victory on a good track.

Following his first-up victory, Liam Prior from the Chris Waller stable was complimentary of New Universe.

“He hasn’t put a foot wrong since he’s arrived and to see him do that first-up off one trial, he’s done a really good job,” commented Prior.

“He shows a lot of ability at home and today put the writing on the wall. He’s a three-year-old with a pretty bright future.”

His second start was on a slow track and while may not have been visually impressive, rider Tommy Berry thought it was in fact better than his first up run and the clock once again shone a light on the horse’s ability.

“This was a bigger win than last start,” Berry said.

“He had to handle a track that he wasn’t really suited by, he was off the bit chasing most of the way and didn’t feel comfortable. For him to rattle off the way that he did and to win with authority, it was a very good win.”

This day he finished the last 600m of his race in 33.20 seconds on the soft track. His last 1000m was clocked at 55.36 seconds. Racing And Sports rated times for the race as being 0.34 (per 200m) slower than average – the adjusted time therefore for the last 1000 metres was a brilliant 54.23.
With ability to reel off impressive closing sectional as he has done in his first two starts, New Universe is sure to have a bright future in Australia.
