A brilliant burst of speed in the final furlong propelled Foxplay (Foxwedge) to victory in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill yesterday in the colours of Star Thoroughbreds for Chris Waller.
Settling near the tail of the field, Foxplay was in a vulnerable position coming into the home straight and rider Kerrin McEvoy made the bold decision to search for a run near the rail.
His decision paid dividends as Foxplay weaved between runners and unleashed an explosive turn of foot once she found clear air inside the last 200m.What turned out to be a brilliant ride had connections panicked at the top of the straight.
“I’m tipping Kerrin wasn’t panicking as much as I was. That’s one thing you can guarantee, he’s pretty level-headed,” commented Waller’s foreman Charlie Duckworth.
McEvoy was quick to divert the attention to the horse post-race.“Full credit to the filly, she picked up really well when I asked her, and she got me out of trouble,” said McEvoy.
Selected by Muclaster Bloodstock for Star Thoroughbreds, Foxplay was purchased from Newgate Farm at the 2015 Magic Millions Sale for $160,000.
Yesterday’s victory was Foxplay’s fourth win from 11 starts and her second at Group 2 level, having previously won the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes in the spring of this season. She has now earned $478,810 for her large group of owners.
