Winx storms to favourite for Queensland Oaks

A powerhouse victory in the Sunshine Coast Guineas has Winx regarded as the leading contender for the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.

The Chris Waller trained filly produced an amazing last-to-first effort in the Group 3 event over 1600m, storming past the entire field with ease.

“At the 1000m I thought ‘This is not good’,’’ said jockey Larry Cassidy.

‘‘At the 600m it was even worse. I was in an impossible position.

“I just made the decision to come to the outside. If I was going to get beat, I didn’t want it to be because I was on the inside behind horses. That was just breathtaking.

‘‘It’s a long time since I’ve been on one that let’s down like that.”

Bookmakers immediately reacted to the win, elevating Winx to the top of betting for the 2200m three-year-old fillies feature at Doomben on May 30.

Winx improved her record to five wins and three placings from 11 starts with the Sunshine Coast Guineas her third at stakes level.

Purchased by Mulcaster Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale for A$230,000, Winx is by Street Cry out of Vegas Showgirl.
