Wazn has continued Chris Waller’s recent dominance of the Wyong Gold Cup (2100m), winning the $150,000 provincial staying feature with a fast-finishing performance.
The win was Waller’s third Wyong Gold Cup success in four years with Hawk Island winning in 2010 and The Verminator in 2011.
Under the guidance of Jim Cassidy, Wazn settled towards the tail of the field and surged around his rivals approaching the turn before powering to the line to defeat Peal Of Bells by a neck with Gazza Guru a further length away in third.
“I would have liked to settle a little closer but I couldn’t get in, so I just went back and got him to switch off,” Cassidy said.
“I put his mind back on the job at about the 800m and he really attacked the line.”
The Wyong Gold Cup is the second stakes victory of Wazn’s career, having already won the Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) in 2012.
Wazn was purchased by Guy Mulcaster at the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale for 36,000gns.
